The Land Transport Authority is continuously conducting the Road Side Enforcement and around 15 defect orders are issued every day to those vehicles who are found emitting thick smoke.
LTA Chairman Vijay Maharaj says that the Authority’s enforcement team is taking appropriate actions to ensure that vehicles emitting thick smoke are off the road.
He made this comment after Legend FM News raised concern that it is noticed that there are some public service vehicles on the road emitting thick black smoke but nothing seems to be done about them.
The question also comes up on how the vehicles got their fitness tests approved as they also go through smoke tests.
Maharaj says that the failed PSV vehicles are referred to reputable franchise motor vehicle dealers for service and maintenance to repair and rectify the causes of high motor vehicle emission levels.
Maharaj highlights that around 250 vehicles go through the test during first registration and renewal of registration.
Maharaj stresses that roadside awareness and education has been conducted to ensure that the travelling public adhere to the strict compliance levels in terms of motor vehicle emission levels.
He adds that smoke emission tests are also done at the bus stand.
People are advised and encouraged to report all high emission motor vehicles to LTA through the 582 free text platform so that necessary measures can be taken.
