The former Supervisor of Elections said the Constitutional Offices Commission is misleading the people of Fiji by saying that there is no one suitably qualified locally to take up the post of Supervisor of Elections.
Semesa Karavaki said locals have taken Fiji to the polls over a long period of time and the Commission Chairman, Rishi Ram's comments do not make any sense at all.
Karavaki also called on the members of the Constitutional Officers Commission to step down as they have embarrassed the people of Fiji by not conducting a simple background check before appointing the new Supervisor of Elections.
On the other hand, Constitutional Offices Commission Chairman Rishi Ram has stressed that no local is qualified to take the position of Supervisor of Elections.
When asked by FijiVillage whether any local would take up the position, Ram said no one is qualified to do the job.
Meanwhile newly appointed Supervisor of Elections Dr Maurice Coughlan's appointment hangs in the balance with the Constitutional Offices Commission expected to decide his fate later today.
After revelations that Dr. Coughlan was disbarred from practicing law in New Zealand in 1992 due to a bad business transaction, Ram said this information was not revealed to them in his application letter or interview.
Commission Chairman Rishi Ram said Coughlan's fate will be known today and at this stage, he is not the Supervisor of Elections
Ram said the Constitutional Offices Commission will appoint someone else to replace him if a decision is made against Dr. Coughlan.
