Japan's Princess Mako will give up her royal status to marry her college sweetheart in a move that will trigger a major debate on royal succession.

The 25-year-old granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, will become engaged to her commoner boyfriend Kei Komuro, after they met while studying together.

Komuro works at a law firm and once worked as “Prince of the Sea” promoting tourism in Japan.

Japanese media that broke the story of Princess Mako’s engagement sent the country into a frenzy with the news dominating television chat shows and newspaper coverage ahead of an expected official announcement in coming weeks.
