Human Rights and Corrections Service partners to ensure inmate care

The Fiji Human Rights and Discrimination Commission has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Fiji Corrections Service today to allow them to conduct inspections and attend to inmate complaints.

While speaking at the event, the Fiji Human Rights Chairperson, Pravesh Sharma says this MoU between the two institutions aims to strengthen the working relationship between the two institutions and will promote and protect the human rights of inmates and detainees.

Sharma says it is vital to ensure that inmates are well looked after.

Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner, Doctor Jalesi Nakarawa says their work is to ensure that inmates receive good care and protection in a secured environment that they do not get out of prison until they are supposed to be released.

Doctor Jalesi says they are grateful to the Human Rights Commission for the motion that will facilitate their effort to perform to international standards.

He adds they are available to be examined by any authority who wants to come in to have a look at their operations.
