The hearing in relation to Apete Kaisau’s application to be released from the custody of St Giles Hospital started today in the Suva High Court.
Kaisau admitted killing Fiji Red Cross boss John Scott and Gregory Scrivener in July 2001 however he was not convicted on the murders on the grounds of insanity.
Medical Superintendent of St Giles Hospital, Dr Peni Biukoto today took the stand and revealed in court that Kaisau is taking medication which is used to treat illusions and hallucinations.
When questioned by state prosecutors, he also told the court that if medicine is taken away, Kaisau would become ill and be in the same situation he was when he killed two people in 2001.
Biukoto also told the court that the risk of relapses is always there as this is the nature of chronic illness.
However, Biukoto told the court that he is satisfied that Kaisau’s father can take care of him at his home and he has been trained by the staff of Saint Giles hospital.
The court was also told that Kaisau will need regular appointments with psychiatric doctors and regular visits by community mental health team if he is released.
The hearing continues this afternoon before High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo.
