To improve public health standards in Fiji, the Ministry of Health is reviewing both the Tobacco Control Act and the Food Safety Act.
The Ministry says internal consultations are currently underway at Tamavua Twomey Hospital to discuss some pressing issues and ensure that the laws meet international best practices.
They say the review of the Tobacco Control Act aims to address key recommendations from the Investment Case for Tobacco Control in Fiji.
The Ministry says they have pinpointed three main areas of focus including expanding smoke-free zones, introducing plain packaging for tobacco products, and completely banning advertising and promotions from the tobacco industry.
They are also looking at regulating the sale of vaping products online and considering tougher penalties for any violations.
The Ministry says the two-decade-old Food Safety Act is also getting a thorough review to find and fix gaps in regulation and enforcement.
They say with changes in food production and consumption, it’s clear that an updated law is needed, especially when it comes to labelling, licensing, and managing food imports safely.
The Health Ministry says this will align Fiji’s food safety rules with international standards while enhancing consumer protection with better labeling and inspection processes.
The Ministry says they will consult the public, encouraging participation to help shape policies that promote health and economic growth for a healthier Fiji.
