Defending Girls champions, ACS won their first Gold from Siteri Sosiceni in the Senior Girls Long Jump.
It looks like a close tussle in the Senior Boys 100 metres finals tonight in the 2009 Coca Cola Games as Grammar sprinters, Mataiasi Savou and Sireli Degei both won their heats a few minutes ago.
Savou of Grammar beat the favourite Sila Central's Tevita Nalovo in the 100 metres heats while Degei again of Grammar beat Queen Victoria School's Jocame Waqavonovono and Natabua's Alfred Smith.
Savou clocked the fastest time from all the heats with a time of 10.89 seconds and Degei has the second fastest time of 10.94 seconds. Nalovo clocked 11.03 seconds under the Electronic Clock.
More upsets in the heats. In the 100 metres Intermediate Boys heats earlier this afternoon, Banuve Tabakaucoro came first with a time of 11.36 seconds.
He is confident of a good run in the 100 metres finals this afternoon.
Tabakaucoro beat his closest rival Lepani Naivalu of Suva Grammar who beat him in the Suva Zone 2.
Meanwhile Salote Niulevu of Suva Grammar School recorded a good time in the Senior Girls 100m heats after she finished at 12.63 seconds.
Niulevu says she is looking forward to the finals tonight.
The Senior Girls 100 metre record stands at 12.16 set by Makelesi Tumalevu of Suva Grammar School last year.
Suva Grammar School's Boys team captain Remesio Lala has claimed their first Gold medal in the 2009 Coca Cola Games after he won the Senior Boys 1500 metres at the TFL stadium this morning.
Lala had a close contest from DAV College who took the Silver and the Bronze went to St Vincent College of Cawaci.
Lala says his Gold medal win in the 1500 metres this morning, is a boost for his side as they aim to successfully defend their title tomorrow.
Lala says he has set the pace and it’s time for the team to deliver.
Meanwhile, things are not going right for the Suva Grammar School girls camp after their Intermediate Girls 100 metres runner, Mereoni Sinudamu was disqualified in the heats for a break start.
The other upset came in the Senior Girls 1500 metres where Salote Naiula of Nadarivatu Secondary School took gold and beat Noela Taqai of Suva Grammar School in the Senior Girls 1500 metres.
The 400 metres heats are currently underway, then we see the 200 metres heats at 2:10pm.
Despite a sad start to their Zone competition, Jasper Williams High School athletes will be taking to the tracks to make sure they win a gold for their teacher who just passed away.
Form Four student, Laisane Rokoiga says before leaving to come to the Cokes, the 24 member squad told the school they would come back with a win in memory of their teacher.
The Lautoka School came third in the Zone games bagging 8 Gold, and 15 silver adding they want to go home with the same result.
Eight gold medals are also at stake on the tracks in the 100 metres from 6 o’clock tonight and another eight are at stake from 6:30 this evening when the 400 metres finals kick off.
