Drilling work at the mouth of the Ba river by an Australian based company has seen the first sample shipment of iron being shipped off to China.

The drilling and mining works being carried out by Amex Resources Limited sees black sand, produced by the natural weathering of certain types of volcanic rocks, which contain iron oxide minerals being tested and then iron extracted from it.

According to the company, their Ba Delta Iron Sands Project at the mouth of the Ba River test results show that a good quality of magnetite concentrate could be produced with 58% iron content.

At the end of January this year, the Ba Delta iron sands project sent its first trial shipment of iron and concentrate to potential Chinese customers.

According to the company, the iron sands operation in Fiji does not require, drilling and blasting, crushing and grinding which sees substantial cost savings.

The Ba Delta Iron Sands Project Headquarters is based at Sorokoba.
