The British High Commission in Fiji has confirmed 140 Fijians in the British Army are to be made redundant.
A Fijian solider that is amongst the 75% that are voluntarily leaving, said when he leaves in December, he will do so voluntarily and will look back at the more than 12 years of army service with no regrets but gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve.
Speaking to Fijivillage from England, the infantry soldier said single Fijian serving soldiers who have done 10 years or more are the people comfortable with the redundancy packages that are being given to them either by obligation or that they are taking up voluntarily, however, for Fijians with families, the story is different.
The soldier said he has heard of Fiji’s High Commission in London assisting those that are leaving to return home but for him after receiving the attractive redundancy lump sum, he has other plans.
In regards to further redundancies next year, the British Army soldier said no official word has been given on the expected number of Fijians that may be made redundant next year.
