We’re building from within, and we want to hand this club over to be coached, managed, and run by Fijians.
This has been highlighted by Fijian Drua General Manager Baden Stephenson, as he reaffirmed the club’s long-term commitment to developing local talent and transitioning to a fully Fijian-led organisation.
While speaking at the start of a week-long symposium on the future of Fijian rugby, Stephenson says strong teamwork, staying true to Fijian culture, and developing players are key to long-term success.
He praised the strong sense of unity and energy in Fijian rugby, noting it was very different from the disconnected systems he experienced while working in Australia.
Stephenson says there is genuine authenticity and a shared vision, from Deans to Under-20s, to 7s, to the Drua, and the national teams.
Stephenson outlined key priorities for the Drua and Fijian rugby as a whole which includes raising standards, putting people first, and providing strong support for players and staff on and off the field.
He says they are committed to an unapologetically Fijian identity, influencing everything from playing style and communication to values and branding.
The General Manager also emphasised the need to build leadership at every level, from grassroots to elite, and highlighted ongoing work to strengthen the connection between the Drua and the Flying Fijians through shared performance systems, values, and facilities.
While reflecting on the 2025 season, he revealed that thorough internal reviews have been carried out to help shape a renewed plan for 2026.
Stephenson also acknowledged recent off-field challenges, saying that values and accountability remain non-negotiable for the Drua.
He says there had been mistakes, but those most affected were the people leading the organisation.
He says they do not believe in sugar-coating anything, they address issues quickly, respectfully, and resolve them.
He emphasised that living the club’s values must go beyond slogans, they must be demonstrated through effort, care, and consistency.
Stephenson urged the Fijian rugby community to celebrate success and focus on progress.
He says people often focus on the negatives, but Fijians should be proud that players like Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada are shining and that this is a win for Fijian rugby.
He says the future of Fijian rugby lies in empowering its own people to lead it forward.
