The fight to contain the population explosion and migration of American Iguana’s from Qamea to neighboring islands continues.
Nature Fiji-Mareqeti Viti Conservation Coordinator, Nunia Thomas said that in the past weeks American Iguanas have been caught swimming between Qamea and Taveuni however they have yet to receive any confirmed reports of nesting activities in Taveuni.
Thomas added that should the American iguanas increase in population and migrate, there could be negative repercussions.
Recent research on the Qamea shows that the estimated American iguana population is 2,500.
