More than 30 Dakuinuku families relocate as high tidal waves threaten homes

More than 30 families in Dakuinuku Village, Tailevu, have relocated to another part of the village as coastal erosion and waves during high tide continue to threaten their homes.

Turaga ni Koro, Iokimi Dau says the families have moved to land identified by their yavusa because of concerns about waves entering parts of the village.

Dau, who is in his fourth year as Turaga ni Koro, says the situation has become a major concern for villagers, with families fearing they may have to relocate again if the problem is not addressed.

He believes changing climate conditions and problems with the seawall built to protect the village have made the situation worse.

Dau says the seawall was not properly completed and says waves continue to enter parts of the village during high tide.

He says the seawall project was carried out by the company in question before he became Turaga ni Koro and says the company has not returned to undertake further work.

Dau is calling on the company and the relevant authorities to inspect the seawall and undertake the necessary work to better protect the village.

He says villagers want a long-term solution to the problem so families can feel safe in their homes and avoid having to relocate again.
