FTUC calls for $6 per hour minimum wage

The Fiji Trades Union Congress is calling on the government to increase the national minimum wage to $6 per hour.

The FTUC has launched the FTUC National Minimum Wage campaign during the 50th Biennial Delegates Conference in Nadi.

FTUC General Secretary, Felix Anthony says they had for many years strived to ensure that workers were paid fairly and ordinary Fijians were lifted out of poverty.

He says they firmly believe that a fair minimum wage is a good place to start if they are serious about getting people out of poverty.

The current national minimum wage is $4 per hour.

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh has confirmed that the new wage rate will be effective from the 1st of August 2024, which will be announced in the budget address by the Minister for Finance.

The budget address will be delivered on June 28th.
