Dr Gaunavinaka urges parents not to give children junk food but choose nutritious options

The Health Ministry is urging parents to make thoughtful choices about their children’s nutrition, especially when it comes to snacks.

While conducting an outreach program on Tuvuca Island in Lau, Dental Officer Dr Mijieli Gaunavinaka spoke directly to parents about a growing concern where many children face tooth extractions due to unhealthy eating habits.

He pointed out these issues often arise when parents opt for convenience, giving kids junk food to keep them busy.

Dr Gaunavinaka says while it might seem like an easy solution at the moment, but this can lead to serious dental problems in the long run.

He emphasized the importance of teaching kids about healthy eating from an early age instead of reaching for sugary snacks.

Dr Gaunavinaka encouraged parents to introduce nutritious options such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grain because these healthier choices not only help protect a child's teeth, but also foster overall health and well-being.
