The construction of a desalination plant on the island of Vanuavatu will relieve fresh water problems for about 200 people of this remote island in the southern Lau Group.
The Minister for Works, Transport and Public Utilities Colonel Timoci Natuva while officially commissioning the Plant says the desalination plant was made possible through a total of $2.5 millon assistance from the government of Japan.
The plant has the capacity to produce 30,000 litres of fresh water a day for the water stricken islands of Viwa, Kavewa, Kia and Vanuavatu.
Vanuavatu Isand Tui Vanua Semi Tadokai said that ever since their ancestors set foot on the island the biggest problem has always been the scarcity of water.
