The battle is on as medals continue to scatter on day one of the 2011 Coca Cola Games and this hour Xavier College from Ba has taken the lead with 2 gold and 1 bronze in the boys division.
Xavier's gold medals came from Joeli Lewaiono in the Intermediate Boys Discus and Malakai Kaiwalu in the Intermediate Boys High Jump event.
Marist Brothers High School is now in second place with 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze, QVS and Ba Provincial Secondary are in third place with 1 gold and 1 silver each.
In the girls division, Suva Grammar School now leads the medal tally with 2 gold and 2 silver. MGM is in second place with 2 gold and 1 silver
The hour has come as the 100 metres heats get underway in the next few minutes and the main question is whether the 18 year old Senior Boys 100 metres record will be broken tonight.
The record which stands at 10.74 seconds was set by Viliame Nasuku in 1993.
According to the manual time recorded, Banuve Tabakaucoro has recorded 10.4 seconds in the Suva Zone 2 meet.
But he will face stiff competition from defending champion, Mataiasi Savou of LDS College and Suva Grammar School's Lepani Naivalu.
When earlier asked whether the 18 year old record is under threat, Tabakaucoro told Fijivillage News that we will just have to wait and see.
The 100 metres heats kick off this hour.
An interesting point to note here, Banuve Tabakaucoro who has the fastest time will run in the same 100 metres heat as defending champion, Mataiasi Savou.
The 100 metres finals will start at 7.25pm tonight.
The 400 metres finals will start at 7pm.
Meanwhile the medals continue to scatter in the field events.
A number of medals have gone to the rural based schools which also show the raw talent in the rural areas.
Marist's first gold medal had come from the field through Angus Antonio in the Junior Boys Javelin Event and hopes are high in the Red Fire camp that the school from Flagstaff will extend their lead further with a number of gold medal prospects taking part in the medal races later this afternoon.
In the girls Open 1,500 metres event, Nadarivatu Secondary School's Mereseini Naidau won gold while Adi Cakobau School's Akesa Drotini and Suva Grammar School's Nohela Taqai were unplaced.
The 200 metres heats have been completed and Banuve Tabakaucoro recorded the fastest time.
His time was 21.8 seconds.
Mataiasi Savou has also qualified from the 200 metres heats.
Suva Grammar School's Lepani Naivalu came second in his heat.
He was beaten by Nadi College's, Epeli Kavarua however both are through to the 200 metres finals.
