Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh says cane farmers will get $85 per tonne this year and they will get a new figure in the next financial year.

Singh highlighted this while responding to Opposition MP Parveen Bala’s question regarding the price farmers will get per tonne of sugar cane in the next season.

Singh says the third cane payment for the 2022 cane season which will be $24.62, is the highest compared to previous payments.

He says he will not reveal further details about what will happen in the 2023-2024 financial year as the processes have not been completed and it is impulsive to make any speculation on what will be paid next season.

Bala asked if this is the case then when will the government implement the increased guaranteed minimum cane price as promised during the election campaign.

Singh says Bala should wait for the budget.
