All Higher Education Institutions operating in Fiji are now governed by one law after the passing of the Higher Education Amendment bill by parliament.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the bill has been amended to extend the definition of a Higher Education Institution.

He says the new definition encompasses any local or overseas Higher Education Institution that is operating in Fiji.

NFP’s leader in parliament Professor Biman Prasad says the argument to change the definition of a Higher Education Institution makes sense but the bill should have also looked at ways to strengthen the Higher Education Commission of Fiji.

He says the Higher Education Commission of Fiji continues to remain a toothless tiger.

SODELPA’s Niko Nawaikula said there should have been more consultations on the bill.

The bill was passed by parliament as 27 MPs voted for the bill while 14 voted against it.
