Justice Hamza says the girl used to refer to the man as her grandfather.

A 67-year-old man who raped an 11-year-old girl on Koro Island in December 2018 has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

The man had pleaded guilty to one count of rape.

While sentencing the man, High Court Judge, Justice Riyaz Hamza says considering time spent in remand, the man will spend 9 years and 1 month in jail.

Justice Hamza says the girl used to refer to the man as her grandfather.

The girl in her victim impact statement has stated that what the man did to her, will not be erased from her mind and that the man stole her childhood.

Justice Hamza says the man should have protected and safeguarded the girl but instead her breached her trust.

The Judge says that he has also noted that the man had cooperated with Police.
