293 people at evacuation centres in Labasa

A flood alert is still in force for the low lying areas adjacent to and downstream of Labasa town, Qawa river, Navolau, Wailotua and Rakiraki town.

A heavy rain warning previously in force for Eastern Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller Islands and the Lau group has been cancelled.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the Lau and Lomaiviti group, Eastern Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller Islands.

A tropical depression which was located about 100km South-Southeast of Taveuni at midday is expected to move away from the group tonight.

293 people are taking shelter at various evacuation centres in Labasa as a number of areas have been affected by flood waters.

Divisional Police Commander Northern Shri Bhuwan Singh said 96 people are taking shelter at Khalsa College in Labasa, Nacula hall has 65 evacuees, Holy Family Secondary School has 39 people while 93 people are taking shelter at Noadamu Block 9 Hall.

According to Singh, Korotari bridge, Noadamu, Naduna, Nakama, Soasoa, Vunimoli, Wailevu village, Bucalevu, Nakobula back road, Vunika, Makomako in Tabia, Daku and Laqalaqa are still affected by flood waters.

A resident of Cogeloa, Labasa, Mohammed Tazil Subedar said a number of farmers have lost their crops and cattle.

It has also been confirmed that the highway between Tabia and Seaqaqa is closed because of a landslide.

Mataniwai road in Naleba is also closed due to a landslide.

In Taveuni, Police said Naselesele village is flooded.
