2 police officers remain in custody for alleged drug possession

The two police officers who were arrested for their alleged possession of illicit drugs in Suva yesterday remain in police custody as investigation continues.

Police say the alleged illicit substances are being tested by the Fiji Police Forensic and Science Services.

Meanwhile, all police officers who are currently serving in the Counter Narcotics Bureau will need to return to their units immediately.

Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua confirms this is being done to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Counter Narcotics Bureau.

Naivalurua says the Ministry will undertake a proper selection process to identify suitable candidates to join this specialised unit.

The Minister says candidates must have a proven record of integrity, be ethic-solid, resilient and are able to perform professionally in highly strenuous work environment and conditions.

He says the country’s Counter Narcotics Bureau is currently being developed and is anticipated to be in full operations by the end of this fiscal year.

Naivalurua stresses that the arrest of these officers is a clear demonstration of the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to accountability and integrity.

He adds police officers who betray their oath and the trust placed in them by the public will face the full brunt of the law, just like any other citizen.
