The University of Fiji’s Original Poetry Composition/Recital Competition organised by the Language, Literature and Communications Department has received a positive response, as 23 secondary schools from the Western Division get ready to take part in the competition.

The University says a total of 156 entries have been received from schools in Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki.

Vice Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem says this initiative is one way of fostering and forging close ties with the secondary schools in the Western Division, who make up the largest percentage of the student intake every year.

Professor Shameem says the Language, Literature and Communications Department is promoting a culture of reading and writing among the children and this competition will provide the students in the Western Division an opportunity to engage in composing and reciting original poems.

Year 9 to 10 students will be in the Junior Category and will work on the topic ‘Identity’ while the Year 11 and 13 students will be in the Senior Category and will work on the topic ‘Nature’.

The winners will get cash prizes, gift hampers and certificates.

The winners will be announced tomorrow at Saweni Campus.
