105 graduate from ServicePro, ready to join Fiji’s growing tourism sector

Today marks a proud milestone for 105 graduates of the ServicePro International Tourism and Hospitality Institute, who celebrate not only the completion of their studies but also for stepping into Fiji’s growing tourism industry.

The students graduated with a Certificate III in Hospitality Operations and a Certificate III in Kitchen Operations after completing a six-month programme.

While speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka commended the students' determination in reaching this stage.

He says the graduates have every reason to take great pride in their hard-earned achievements, reminding them that these accomplishments are just the beginning.

He says that they should embrace the opportunities ahead and boldly step into the next chapter of their lives.

The Minister also acknowledged ServicePro’s commitment to offering second chances for those outside mainstream education.

He says that over 17,000 students leave secondary school annually, but only 12,000 to 13,000 transition into mainstream education, leaving 5,000 to 6,000 without immediate opportunities.

He adds that this gap is addressed by institutions offering TVET programmes, which provide alternative pathways for these students.

Gavoka says that starting in 2024, the institution began receiving a government grant of $100,000.

He says that in the new financial year, the government has continued its support with an additional $95,000 to the institution.

He says that with Fiji’s tourism sector now surpassing pre-pandemic levels, the industry needs skilled workers more than ever.

Director of SITHI, Epi Gonewai says ServicePro is also expanding its impact through new partnerships with TAFE Queensland and Pioneer International College in Sydney, Australia.

He says that the institute is aligning with the Pacific Labour Mobility Scheme, and has delivered outreach training in remote areas and across the region.

Gonewai says that with many alumni already working as chefs, resort managers, and business owners, these new graduates are set to follow in their footsteps — proudly serving Fiji’s tourism industry.
