Two exciting new laws will be introduced for the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa Competition that includes goal-line drop-out and captains referral.

The two law variations will be used for the first time when pre-season matches begin this weekend.

The new laws, which have been approved by World Rugby Executive Committee have been introduced after extensive feedback and collaboration with players, coaches and referees.

A goal-line drop-out will be given when an attacking player carrying the ball is held up in their try line or knocks on the ball in the in-goal area, or when the attacking team kicks and is grounded by the defending team in their in-goal area.

A captain’s referral will give each captain one opportunity per match to ask the referee to have the Television Match Official check for any infringement leading up to a try, or to review foul-play.

The 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa Competition will kick-off on the 26th of this month with defending champions the Crusaders facing the Highlanders at 6.05pm.
