Tailevu residents call for major constitutional changes to support development

The people of Tailevu believe the current Constitution and other laws are preventing development in their communities and want major changes to be considered through the Constitution Review process.

Tailevu Provincial Council Chairman Semi Matalau says many people feel laws relating to land, natural resources and the Bill of Rights have affected the way the Vanua is managed and have limited development opportunities.

Matalau says these concerns are not unique to Tailevu but are shared by many provinces around the country.

He says people in Tailevu are urging the Constitution Review Commission to listen to their views and consider drafting a new Constitution that better reflects the aspirations of ordinary people.

He adds that many residents believe Fiji's current political system has created divisions and weakened community unity.

Matalau says there is support for changes to the electoral system, including a return to constituency-based representation, as people want Members of Parliament to be more directly accountable to the communities they serve.

Meanwhile, Matalau is calling on the Government to focus the upcoming national budget on easing the cost of living pressure facing families.

He says rising food prices continue to put pressure on household budgets and more support should be directed towards agriculture, fisheries and forestry.

Matalau says strengthening these sectors will improve food security, create income opportunities and help rural communities better cope with the increasing cost of living.
