A Nadi resident, Sitiveni Ratusawa told the Constitution Review Commission that any changes to Fiji's Constitution should benefit all citizens equally, while also calling for greater consideration of long-term prisoners and men's rights.
Speaking during a consultation in Nadi, Ratusawa says that if the Constitution is amended, the changes should be enjoyed by everyone in Fiji and not just a select group.
To illustrate his point, he uses the example of a father telling his children not to smoke while continuing to smoke himself, saying rules and principles should apply equally to all.
Ratusawa is also calling on the Commission to consider the circumstances of people serving long-term prison sentences, saying their welfare and rights should be taken into account during the constitutional review process.
He further suggests that if laws exist to protect the rights of women, there should also be laws that specifically address the rights of men.
The submissions were made during the Constitution Review Commission consultation as members of the public continue to share their views on possible changes to the Constitution.
