Major preparations begin for Diwali celebrations tomorrow

Major preparations are taking place around the country for Diwali celebrations tomorrow.

Shops are full today in Suva where people have been seen buying lights, firecrackers, clothes and gifts.

Fijivillage spoke to some people in Suva City who say they are looking forward to major Diwali celebrations tomorrow.

Diwali festivities officially begin two days before Diwali and the first day is known as Dhanteras.

This day is solely dedicated to the worship of goddess Lakshmi.

Hindus consider this day very auspicious and buy something precious specifically gold, silver, gemstones, new utensils and clothes.

The day between Dhanteras and Diwali is celebrated as Chhoti Diwali, Diwali falls on the third day which is the main festival.

People light diyas and candles and decorate their homes with fairy lights. After a pooja or prayer, people visit their neighbours and relatives to exchange sweets and gifts.

The fourth day is Govardhan Puja and the fifth and last day of the festival is Bhai Dooj.

On this day, brothers visit their sisters which is similar to Raksha Bandhan.
