More than 70 graduates of Pacific Polytech's Labasa Campus have been reminded that the skills they have gained are urgently needed as Fiji faces significant labour and skills shortages across many sectors.
While officiating at the Pacific Polytech Cohort 5 Graduation Ceremony at the Labasa Civic Centre, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu emphasised that the graduates are entering the workforce at a critical time for the country.
Bulitavu says the recently launched National Skills Gap Assessment Survey confirmed that Fiji is experiencing shortages in several key trades and professions, including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, mechanics, healthcare workers, engineers and agricultural specialists.
He told the graduates that their qualifications are not only valuable but are also essential for Fiji's continued growth and development.

The Minister acknowledged the challenges posed by labour migration and the increasing demand for skilled workers across the country, stressing the importance of retaining and developing local talent.
He says every home built, school upgraded, health facility improved and infrastructure project completed depends on skilled workers.
He says, as Government continues to invest in development projects, particularly in rural and maritime communities, the expertise of skilled graduates will play a vital role in building a stronger and more resilient Fiji.
The graduates completed qualifications in Automotive Engineering, Carpentry, Electrical Fitter Mechanics, Plumbing and Sheetmetal, Office Technology, Personalised Aged Care and Agriculture.

Bulitavu also encouraged graduates to continue upgrading their skills and adapt to changing workplace demands, including the growing importance of digital technology.
He acknowledged the support of families and guardians and commended Pacific Polytech for its contribution to workforce development.
A total of 356 students have graduated from Pacific Polytech campuses in Labasa, Tavua and Nausori this year.
