An increase in funding for the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry is expected in the 2026-2027 National Budget as support continues for farmers, sugarcane growers and key industry programmes.
Minister Tomasi Tunabuna says they will expect funding for some of their stakeholders that they provide grants to.
He says they provide assistance in farm development, including provision of some farm access roads while in the sugar sector, they provide a lot of assistance to farmers and also assist the Fiji Sugar Corporation with their different programs.
A total funding of $72 million was provided to the sugar industry in the 2025-2026 National Budget to cater for fertiliser and weedicide subsidies, sugar price support, cartage subsidies, cane access roads and farm mechanisation.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways had received an increased allocation of $115 million in the budget to support the growth and development of Fiji's agriculture sector.
The funding includes support for crop and livestock research, extension services, farm mechanisation, and fertiliser and weedicide subsidies for farmers.
The 2026-2027 National Budget will be delivered at 10am Friday.
