Tribal Shack gives vulnerable youths a second chance through employment

A restaurant in Valelevu called Tribal Shack is giving vulnerable young people a second chance at life by providing employment, life skills and hope through their Team Gideon Rehabilitation Programme.

Founder of the program and restaurant manager Josevata Tabuya says many of the youths they work with find it difficult to secure employment because of their backgrounds and lack of qualifications, so the organisation created the restaurant to give them meaningful work instead of leaving them to wander the streets.

According to Tabuya, about 150 young people have gone through the rehabilitation programme over the years.

He says giving young people employment is an important first step in helping them regain confidence, purpose and respect.

The Tribal Shack restaurant is located in the Valelevu industrial area, near the service station, and serves traditional Fijian cuisine.

The idea behind the restaurant was to also provide a healthier local food option in an area surrounded by fast food outlets while creating a safe and supportive workplace for vulnerable youths.

The restaurant currently employs six staff members, many of whom have come through the rehabilitation programme.

Tabuya is encouraging young people facing difficult circumstances not to lose hope.

He says no matter the challenges they face, there is always an opportunity to change their lives, adding that with determination, support and faith, anything is possible.
