That is the message from Roko Tui Bau, Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua, the nephew of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, as Fiji marks Ratu Sukuna Day and reflects on the contributions of one of the nation's foremost leaders.

Ratu Timoci says what made Ratu Sukuna remarkable was not only his achievements, but also his character and values.
He says throughout more than four decades of public service, Ratu Sukuna was known for his integrity, honesty and strong moral principles, with no scandal ever associated with his name.
Ratu Timoci says despite holding significant influence and authority, Ratu Sukuna remained courteous and respectful to everyone, regardless of their position in society.

He says one of Ratu Sukuna's greatest strengths was his accessibility to ordinary people and his willingness to listen and engage with them.
According to Ratu Timoci, those who knew Ratu Sukuna personally never described him as arrogant, conceited or opinionated, despite the immense respect and authority he commanded.
He says Ratu Sukuna believed leadership was about serving others and demonstrated throughout his life that public service should always be grounded in the welfare of the people.

Ratu Timoci says his uncle also showed that national unity could only be achieved through dialogue, understanding and mutual respect among different communities.
He says Ratu Sukuna successfully balanced the protection of culture and tradition with the need for progress and development, proving the two could go hand in hand.
The Roko Tui Bau says Ratu Sukuna firmly believed Fiji's greatest strength lay in its people, their resilience, values and their shared future.

He adds that many of the institutions and systems that continue to shape Fiji today, including land administration, governance, education and the public service, were built on foundations laid by Ratu Sukuna.
Ratu Timoci says as younger generations seek to understand the leaders who helped shape the nation, Ratu Sukuna's life remains a powerful reminder that true greatness is measured not by power or status, but by service and contribution to the people.

He says more than six decades after his passing, the legacy of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna continues to guide Fiji and remains an example of visionary leadership, nation-building and selfless service.
