23-year-old Bushra Shaheenaz Sakib has made history for her family, emerging as one of USP’s top graduates and the first in her family to graduate with honours after years of determination and sacrifice.

Sakib was named the Vice-Chancellor’s All-Rounder Best Female Graduate for 2026, in recognition of her strong academic performance and commitment to community service at the USP Medals and Prizes Ceremony.

Born in Labasa and currently residing in Suva, Sakib says that coming from a single-parent household meant facing financial difficulties while managing her studies, internships and work responsibilities.

She adds that living far from campus made it even more challenging to balance her commitments, but her passion helped her persevere.

Sakib, who completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and Social Work, highlights that her achievement holds special meaning as she is the first female in her family to access higher education.

She noted that this had already been a major milestone for her, and she had been motivated by a desire to prove that she could succeed despite limited resources.

As the eldest sibling, Sakib says she feels proud to be setting a positive example for her younger sister, adding that while she does not expect her sister to follow the exact same path, she hopes her journey will inspire her to work towards her own goals.

Reflecting on her university experience, Sakib describes it as positive, noting that she received strong support from her lecturers and benefited from various opportunities, including internships and campus programmes that helped build her skills.

She encourages other students to remain determined and make the most of available opportunities advising that students should not give up and should actively participate in community work and other activities, not only to meet requirements but also for personal growth and pride.

Sakib is currently pursuing postgraduate studies while working and indicated that she hopes to continue her education further, possibly towards a master’s degree.

Her journey highlights how resilience and determination can break barriers, paving the way for future generations.

Meanwhile USP graduation will be held tomorrow and Friday.
