We've had enough of it, we want this Constitution gone - GCC Chair

Paramount Chief Na Marama Bale Roko Tui Dreketi Ro Teimumu Kepa and Great Council of Chiefs Chairman, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula

We want this Constitution gone.

This is the sentiment shared by the Great Council of Chiefs Chairman, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, while briefing the media after the end of the second day of the GCC meeting held at the Valenibose in Draiba.

Ratu Viliame says the Constitution is restricting a lot of work for the indigenous people, and the chiefs have had enough of it.

He says there are even suggestions that it came out through the back door and should go back through the back door.

When asked by the media if the discussion on the Constitution was part of the agenda or was brought up by a member, Ratu Viliame says it came up in other matters as one of the members raised what has happened to this.

He says he had raised the topic during the media conference, and now it has more voice.

When questioned on what he meant about taking further actions, the Chair said he would talk about it with the chiefs.

Ratu Viliame emphasized that they want to remove the laws that hinder the progress of the iTaukei and all the Bills that restrict the full realization of the natural resources.

He says not all these rules were introduced by the previous government as some laws are from the colonial days and need to go or be amended to meet the challenges of today.

He adds they are not talking about the Constitution as a whole and are not interested in creating a new one.
