Vanua o Noco marks major education milestone with new school project

It was a moment of celebration for students, parents and the wider school community as Ratu Sauvoli Memorial School in Rewa marked the groundbreaking of a new classroom block aimed at improving learning opportunities for children.

The Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro says the project will deliver three modern classrooms for students in Years 6 to 8 and give children a more comfortable and supportive space to learn.

Radrodro says the new building will be constructed to Category 5 cyclone standards, and can also be used as a community shelter during natural disasters.

He says Ratu Sauvoli Memorial School currently serves 272 primary students and 43 kindergarten students from 10 villages in the Noco District.

The Minister also acknowledged the support of the Government and people of Japan, for funding the project through the Japan Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

Radrodro also highlighted the recent passing of the Education Bill 2025, saying it strengthens access, inclusion, accountability, student welfare and teacher professionalism across the education sector.

He reminded schools that levies and fundraising contributions remain voluntary, and should not prevent children from accessing education or participating in school activities.

Radrodro says schools around the country will also take part in activities next week for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
