Domain resident gives injured stray dog a second chance

A Domain resident who rescued an injured stray dog from the roadside, is encouraging more people to desex their pets after bringing the animal to a free desexing clinic in Suva today.

Claire Barrett says she found the dog with a serious burn injury and decided to care for it until it recovered.

Now that the dog is healthy enough, she brought it to the free desexing clinic at the Nasova Mass Hall to prevent more unwanted puppies from ending up on the streets.

Barrett says she also has four other dogs at home, and took the opportunity to have them cared for through the clinic.

She says it is heartbreaking to see so many unwanted dogs and puppies abandoned along roadsides and in communities across Fiji.

Barrett is encouraging pet owners to desex both male and female dogs and cats, she says responsible pet ownership is one of the best ways to reduce the growing number of stray animals.

She says if more people take responsibility for their pets, fewer animals would end up living on the streets.

Barrett believes everyone has a role to play in improving animal welfare and creating safer communities for both people and animals.
