Several young people living on the streets in Lautoka have been safely transported to shelters where they will receive accommodation, health screenings, counselling and life skills training as Government agencies strengthen efforts to support vulnerable people experiencing homelessness.
The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection says it has been working with stakeholders to profile people living on the streets, particularly along Marine Drive and within the Lautoka city area, and identify sustainable pathways to support vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness.
The Ministry says teams conducted assessments to connect individuals with appropriate support services.
They say that of the seven older persons identified, three have been admitted to the Lautoka Golden Age Home, while the remaining four chose to return to their villages and families.
They add that nine young women identified during the operation have also been admitted to safe shelters, where they will receive protection and case management support.
The Ministry says individuals identified with psychosocial needs are being transported to appropriate care facilities by officials from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
They have also identified several individuals requiring specialised interventions, including drug rehabilitation, and are coordinating the necessary referrals with relevant service providers.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran held a briefing this week with officials from the Fiji Police Force, Lautoka City Council, the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and Social Welfare officers to receive an update on strategies aimed at helping vulnerable people living on the streets access a life of dignity.
Kiran says families are the first line of care and protection and has asked families and communities to welcome their loved ones home with compassion, understanding and encouragement.
She says many have experienced difficult personal circumstances and successful reintegration depends not only on Government support but also on acceptance, care and ongoing family and community support.
The Ministry says Government agencies continue to work together to ensure every identified individual receives the support they need.
They say they will continue working closely with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs to support family and community reintegration and assist eligible individuals to apply for available social protection assistance.
They have also acknowledged Medical Services Pacific, Salvation Army and Empower Pacific for the wrap-around services being provided.
