Vuaki Village headman Etuate Saukuru says the high cost of basic items such as sugar, flour and rice is affecting families across the island.

Speaking to fijivillage News, Saukuru says a 2-kilogram bag of sugar now costs more than $9, while a full gallon of kerosene costs around $20 and four litres of benzene costs about $25.

He says kerosene remains an essential item for many families, particularly during wet weather when it is difficult to find dry firewood for cooking.

The village headman says the issue was discussed during a village meeting, where residents agreed to do more farming and collect additional firewood as they struggle with rising food and fuel costs.

Saukuru also highlighted the increase in boat fares, saying the cost of a one-way trip has risen from $60 to $80.

He says families are now sharing basic necessities and household items to help one another cope with the rising cost of living.

Saukuru says children are among those most affected, as some families struggle to afford everyday essentials, making life more difficult for students and households throughout the village.

He says he understands not much can be done regarding the rising cost of living, and we just have to live with it.
