Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa confirms the Public Rental Board is now trying to get a court order as the residents of Topline Housing in Mead Road who are living in unsafe buildings, are yet to move out.
Several issues have been raised regarding alleged drugs and criminal activities in the area by the Police and the Military for some time.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Nalumisa says the building structures at PRB Mead Road have been certified to be structurally unsafe by the engineers, hence the need for the vacation of all the flats and they will then be demolished.
The Minister says consultations were done last year for the tenants to start vacating their flats.
Nalumisa says the flats were supposed to be vacated in December last year.
He says the PRB is also seeking funding to relocate some tenants while some have been relocated to other PRB estates in Suva.
There are 144 tenants altogether and 105 tenants are yet to vacate.
Nalumisa also says the PRB has started a task force with the Fiji Police Force to discuss and strategise ways of addressing the drug related issues at Mead Road.
He also says that we need to commend and support the joint operations by the Army and the Police to address the drug related issues in our country.
Nalumisa says the whole community, individuals, families, religious groups, the vanua and the government must all work together to address this issue because it is affecting our youths and our country.
We have sent questions to PRB.
