No single leader or programme can tackle HIV outbreak alone - Wong

Fiji’s HIV response requires a whole-of-community approach, with Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong saying no single leader or programme can address the challenge alone as the country works to respond to the outbreak.

This was highlighted during the opening of the new National Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Office, located in Augustus Street, Toorak.

She says there is no quick fix to HIV and that the global response to HIV and AIDS has shown it requires significant work, partnership and community engagement.

Wong says Fiji is experiencing fastest-growing HIV outbreak in the world and says Australia is standing with Fiji in responding to the crisis.

Wong says the $23.5 million funding announced by Australia will support prevention, training, workplace support, community outreach and essential health supplies.

She says communities are partners in the fight against HIV and highlighted the important role of faith leaders and traditional leaders in supporting the response.

Responding to questions on whether Australia’s healthcare funding is being used effectively, Wong says she spoke with health officials about how the money is being used and what global best practices are being drawn on in responding to HIV.

She says Fiji is working with various partners, including Australian partners, the World Health Organization and others, in designing and implementing the response.

Responding to questions about the Australian governments support for drug rehabilitation centres amid concerns about drug issues linked to HIV, Wong says Australia responds to Fiji’s priorities.

She says it is important to work in partnership with communities and others involved in Fiji’s response.

Wong says she met with people from different sectors and professions who are working hard in Fiji’s HIV response and highlighted the importance of improving capability and capacity.

She says Australia has been Fiji’s health partner for some time and that the Vuvale Union Health Package represents a substantial commitment over 10 years.

Wong says part of the commitment under the Vuvale Union includes upgrading Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Wong also acknowledges Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu’s comments on stigma, saying his message that stigma does not protect people was a powerful act of leadership.
