Many first-home buyer families will soon be able to move into their new homes as housing developments in Nepani, in Nasinu nears completion while work is underway in Davuilevu Housing.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made the comments following a visit to Housing Authority developments, where he assessed progress on projects aimed at improving access to quality housing for low- and middle-income earners.
Rabuka says it was encouraging to see how much progress had been made since the projects were first presented to Cabinet, noting that the developments offer hope to many people who have relocated from rural areas and are currently living in informal settlements or temporary arrangements with relatives.
He says the doors of the new homes will soon be opened to those requiring housing assistance, with some families expected to become homeowners while others may initially move in as tenants.
Rabuka further highlighted the potential for similar housing models to be adopted in rural communities that may need relocation due to the impacts of climate change, particularly villages threatened by rising sea levels and coastal erosion.
Rabuka also praised the Minister for Housing, Housing Authority executives, ministry officials and construction workers for turning the projects into reality.
