Former New South Wales State of Origin player Matt King has been appointed the new head coach of the Blues.

King was confirmed in the role after predecessor Laurie Daley stepped down on Monday.

The 45-year-old represented the Blues nine times between 2005 and 2007, and played more than 200 first-grade matches for Melbourne, South Sydney and Warrington across the NRL and England's Super League.

King says he has a clear understanding of what it means to be the head coach of New South Wales and is excited by the opportunity to lead the state.

He has been a long-time assistant coach under Trent Robinson at the Sydney Roosters and has also been part of the Blues coaching staff since 2024.

Daley resigned after guiding New South Wales to this year's State of Origin series victory.

The Blues wrapped up the series with a 30-12 win over Queensland in the deciding match at Lang Park, marking just the fourth time New South Wales has won a deciding Game III in Brisbane.
