ACTU will not ease stance against Fiji

The President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions Ged Kearney said it will not ease its stance against the Fiji regime despite the announcement of details for a new constitution.

She said the plans announced looks like a good thing on the face of it but the regime has already made worrying comments which raise doubts about transparency and freedoms.

Kearney added she is still hearing stories from unionists that they are taken in by either police or the military and intimidated or interrogated.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the phrase “out of touch” does not begin to describe the Australian Council of Trade Unions view of Fiji.

He added Kearney is plainly ill informed, issuing knee jerk commentary about Fiji with an utter disregard for the truth and that this the likely result of having unionist “informants” who are blinded by self interest.
