New flag flying

As only hours remain for Fiji to celebrate its 42nd year of independence, a lot has changed over the years after 1970 and work is now underway to formulate a new constitution for the country that is focused on the citizens having a common identity and equal opportunities.

In an interview with Radio NZ in late 1995 in a documentary called ‘New Flags Flying’, the late former President and Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara had revealed that Fiji was one of the British colonies that pushed to ensure that the country does not have a common roll for elections after independence.

This was pushed by the indigenous Fijian members who formed the Fijian Association and the Alliance in the 1960's.

Ratu Mara said at the time that common roll was out of the question.

The late Ratu Mara also spoke about preparations for Independence Day on October 10th, 1970 when the Fiji flag went up for the first time.

We encourage people to fly a flag for Fiji as we celebrate the 42nd year of our independence.

People are also encouraged to wear blue today as many workplaces are also organizing their Fiji Day celebrations today due to the public holiday tomorrow.
