Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta highlighted India’s remarkable journey of transformation since gaining independence in 1947 and the deep-rooted bonds of friendship between India and Fiji.
Mehta reflected on India’s progress in economic development, digital transformation, renewable energy, space technology, pharmaceuticals and innovation, while emphasising the country’s vision of becoming a developed and prosperous nation by 2047.
He also highlighted the longstanding people-to-people connections between India and Fiji, which date back to the arrival of Indian indentured labourers, the Girmitiyas, in Fiji in 1879.
Mehta says the relationship between the two countries goes beyond diplomatic ties, with shared history, culture and traditions continuing to strengthen the partnership.
He also outlined areas of growing cooperation between India and Fiji, including education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, digital technology, renewable energy, ocean research and human resource development.
In a message delivered on behalf of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the Government and people of India were congratulated on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the vision, courage and sacrifices of those who secured India’s independence and praised the country’s emergence as a major force in economic growth, innovation and global cooperation.
He says the occasion holds special significance for Fiji because of the deep historical and people-to-people connections between the two countries, particularly through the descendants of the Girmitiyas who have enriched Fiji’s multicultural society.
He also acknowledged India’s continued support for Fiji in areas including education, health, infrastructure, digital transformation, renewable energy, climate resilience and capacity building.
He says Fiji looks forward to further strengthening its partnership with India and advancing shared aspirations for peace, prosperity, resilience and sustainable development.
The message concluded with a toast to the President, Government and people of India, with wishes for continued peace, prosperity, good health and happiness.
