It costs the Suva City Council $80,000 a year to collect garbage from the Squatter Settlements in the Suva City area.
Special Administrator for Suva Chandu Umaria said the Council has been collecting rubbish from squatter settlements free for the past 16 years, and the council has decided to start charging garbage fees for the very first time for squatter areas.
Umaria said they have charged $28/year for garbage collection and some areas have paid while some have made arrangements to pay at the end of the year.
Umaria added if they fail to pay then they will be taken to court.
