The Suva Magistrates Court this morning handed down a suspended sentence to a man with 46 previous convictions.
Alefereti Yaya pleaded guilty to one count of robbery with violence and the court heard that on 11th April three years ago Yaya and his accomplice entered a house in Samabula, threatened a house maid with knives, ransacked the house and later walked away with items worth $2970.
Magistrate Tushaara Rajasinghe while sentencing said that robbery with violence is becoming a serious problem and that the offence was committed in broad day light which shows that Yaya and his accomplice demonstrated total disregard to law and order.
Magistrate Rajasinghe started his sentencing starting point with seven years and later reduced it to two years and then suspended sentence after considering the fact that Yaya is now a reformed person and that he is working with the Prisons Fellowship as an events co-ordinator.
He has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and suspended for three years.
