Ministry receives proposal for increase in taxi fares

The Ministry of Transport has been asked to consider a proposal for an increase in taxi fares.

LTA Chairman Gregory Robert Lawlor confirmed to Fijivillage that a proposal from the Fiji Taxi Union was handed to them by the Ministry for consideration, and after looking through the proposal they have sent it to the Ministry for a decision.

Lawlor said the increased costs of maintaining and operating a taxi business must be taken into account as prices of spare parts, tyres, fuel and overall maintenance has increased.

Lawlor also confirmed that as per the directive of the Prime Minister, the LTA is also reviewing its current fee and charges and the matter will also be taken to the Ministry soon.

However, Lawlor stressed that such policy matters can only be amended and approved through legislative changes and the final decision lies with the government.

The Prime Minister had directed that the LTA stop thinking that it is a money making machine and to consider reviewing its fee structure.

Meanwhile, Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary Rishi Ram confirmed that they have made a proposal for increase in taxi fares but refused to reveal any details saying their proposal could be jeopardized.

The Ministry of Transport is yet to comment on the matter.
