Defence to file no-case-to-answer application in Rewa Street and Flagstaff meth case

Defence to file no-case-to-answer application in Rewa Street and Flagstaff meth case
Defence lawyers Maria Raga, Jerry Dinati and Shirley Tivou will make a no-case-to-answer application in the Rewa Street and Flagstaff methamphetamine case after the State closed its case this afternoon.

Magistrate Sufia Hamza will review the application next Friday.

Meanwhile, during the trial, Scientific Officer Mere Tauvoli of the Fiji Police Force Chemistry Laboratory testified that drugs seized from the Yue Lai Hotel weighed 42.295 grams and tested positive for methamphetamine.

She says the drugs, weighing 41.187 grams and 1.108 grams, were tested separately after being received by the laboratory on 24th September 2025.

The white crystal exhibits were also shown in court, and Tauvoli confirms that the seals remains after testing, indicating there had been no tampering.

She also told the court that the test results were reviewed by her supervisor.

Tauvoli further says that 39.509 grams of crystal seized from Lot 170 Rewa Street tested positive for methamphetamine.

She also confirmed that 0.345 grams of crystal found at Lot 134 Rewa Street tested positive for methamphetamine.

During cross-examination, defence lawyer Maria Raga put to Tauvoli that she would not know which officers handled the exhibits before they reached the laboratory and suggested they could have been contaminated.

Tauvoli responded that she could not answer that.

Tauvoli agreed with defence lawyer Jerry Dinati when he put to her that she would not know where the exhibits were seized from unless she was present.

Dinati further suggested that the drugs tested were not the original exhibits.

Tauvoli replied that she could not answer that.

Meanwhile, the Principal Scientific Officer, Miliana Werebauinona says a request was made for comparison testing between the drugs that were found.

She says the comparison analysis was done by the Senior Scientific Officer, Susana Lawedrau where it was found that the similarity between them was a acceptable match.

During cross-examination, when Raga questioned if the result by Tauvoli was unreliable, she said she doesn't agrees to that.

Tauvoli disagreed with defence lawyer Shirley Tivou when she asked if there was any possiblity of cross-contimination.

She says that blank runs are done to ensure that there are no carry-overs.

It is alleged that Josua Ravula was found with unlawful possession of 42.295 grams of methamphetamine.
