Wailevu beat Batinikama 3-0 in the opening Premier Division match of the Matuk Motor Spares Vanua Levu Muslim IDC tournament yesterday at Subrail Park in Labasa.
Both teams started strongly, but Wailevu soon took control through the experience of former Dreketi and Labasa representative Mohammed Shaheel Yaseen, who dictated play in midfield and created several opportunities for his side.
Wailevu's well-structured attacking play paid off as they scored three unanswered goals to secure a comfortable victory.
Despite the loss, Batinikama showed promise with their young squad but were unable to convert their chances.
Speaking to fijivillage News after the match, Wailevu captain Mohammed Shaheel Yaseen praised his teammates for their performance.
Yaseen says the team played well and scoring the opening goal early gave them confidence.
He says they will now turn their attention to their next match against Vunimoli and prepare well for the challenge.
Yaseen says it has been a long time since Wailevu last won the Premier Division title, and the team is determined to give its best and bring the trophy back home.
Wailevu will take on Vunimoli in their next Premier Division match as they continue their quest for the championship.
Meanwhile, in other matches Valebasoga defeated Vunimoli 1-0 in the Premier Division, while Nasea and Soasoa played out a goalless draw in the Super Premier Division.
