The Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific 2026 has received a major boost, with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua formally announcing the signing of former European Player of the Year, Virimi Vakatawa.
The barnstorming centre, who has earned 32 Test caps for France, hails from Naluwai in Naitasiri, one of Fiji’s most prominent rugby provinces.
Vakatawa claimed the 2020 Oscar Europe Player of the Year award, a prestigious honour presented by Midi Olympique to the best player in European rugby.
His return to Fiji to join the Fijian Drua marks an exciting new chapter in a rugby career that has spanned the French Top 14, the English Premiership, and the World Rugby Sevens Series.
The 33-year-old made 52 appearances for Racing 92, scoring 15 tries, and featured 18 times for Bristol Bears, crossing the try line on four occasions.
In 2025, Vakatawa played for Naitasiri in the Skipper Cup, Fiji’s top provincial competition, helping the side reach the grand final.
Vakatawa becomes the Fijian Drua’s seventh signing for the 2026 season, after spending the 2025 off-season training with the team during an extended stay in Fiji.
He brings world-class experience, composure, and leadership to the Drua midfield.
Fijian Drua General Manager Commercial Shane Hussein says the club is delighted to welcome Vakatawa to the team.
Hussein adds that Vakatawa is eager to make a positive contribution to the Fijian Drua, both on and off the field, using his wealth of experience and exceptional skill set.
Vakatawa is widely regarded as one of Fiji’s most accomplished rugby exports.
His rugby journey began at Rara District School in Naluwai through the Kaji competition, before progressing through Naitasiri Secondary School and Nasinu Secondary School. During his time at Nasinu, he also played rugby league, showcasing his versatility across sporting codes.
Expressing his excitement, Vakatawa says he is grateful that, with his experience, he can help guide the younger players and share the knowledge he gained during his time in France.
He also represented France in the World Rugby Sevens Series and was named the inaugural Impact Player of the Tournament at the 2016 Dubai Sevens.
The Fijian Drua will take on the Chiefs this afternoon at 2.
